This catalogue lists all known species of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) from Austria. A total of 4071 species are recognised, while a further 119 species records are either false, ambiguous or based on accidentally introduced individual animals without possibility of permanent establishment. The systematic list is largely based on Fauna Europaea (www.faunaeur.org) and follows the latest findings, particularly in molecular biology.In addition to the valid names of taxa, important synonyms are also considered. The following taxonomic changes are made: Promalactis atriplagata Park & Park, 1998 syn. nov. is a junior subjective synonym of Bisigna procerella (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) (Oecophoridae), Phiaris schaefferana (Herrich-Schäffer, 1847) syn. rev. is a junior subjective synonym of Phiaris palustrana (Lienig & Zeller, 1847) and not of Phiaris septentrionana (Curtis, 1835) (Tortricidae), Orenaia preisseckeri Rebel, 1903 syn. nov. is a junior subjective synonym of Orenaia lugubralis (Lederer, 1857) (Crambidae). A faunistic table provides detailed information on the occurrence of species in the different provinces (Tyrol biogeographically separated into North and East Tyrol) with numerous new provincial records and corrections. The following species are new for the fauna of Austria: Phyllocnistisvalentinensis M. Hering, 1936 (Gracillariidae), Metalampra italica Baldizzone, 1977 (Oecophoridae), Gladiovalva aizpuruai Vives, 1990 (Gelechiidae), Elachista pomerana Frey, 1870 (Elachistidae), Isotrias stramentana (Guenée, 1845), Cochylimorpha halophilana (Christoph, 1872) (Tortricidae), Charissa italohelveticus (Rezbanyai-Reser, 1986) (Geometridae), Bryophila felina (Eversmann, 1852) and Shargacucullia gozmanyi G. Ronkay & L. Ronkay, 1994 (Noctuidae). In addition a number of yet unrevised species is listed. Comprehensive comments on taxonomically or faunistically interesting species, colour photographs of a subset of 128 taxa and an index complement the checklist.
