Résumé :

Volume 2 of the book series 'The Geometrid Moths of Europe' presents a modern revision of the European taxa of the subfamily Sterrhinae, which is represented in Europe by 196 species belonging to six tribes and 18 genera. In Europe, the extremely species-rich genus Idaea is subdivided into 23 species-groups, according to external and internal morphological characters. Similarly, the genus Scopula is subdivided into seven species-groups. The species are presented with their full name and reference to the original description, fully referenced junior synonyms, unavailable names (including misidentifications), diagnosis, distribution, phenology, biology including host-plants, habitat (with vertical distribution), parasitoids and differential features from similar species. Special emphasis is given to the descriptions of genitalic features. For each species line drawings of male and female genitalia, colour photographs of adults, and distribution maps for Europe and adjacent countries are provided. Three new species and three new subspecies are described: Idaea leipnitzi sp. n. from Croatia, Idaea admiranda sp. n. from Turkey, Idaea dromikos sp. n. from eastern Pyrenees, Idaea bigladiata alberti subsp. n. from Algeria, Oar pratana baezi subsp. n. from Canary islands, and Glossotrophia alba milleri subsp. n. from Corsica. The following 102 taxonomic changes are formally introduced: One generic name is downgraded to synonymy: Apostates (WARREN, 1897), syn. n. of Rhodostrophia. One name is raised to genus rank: Holarctias (PROUT, 1913), stat. n., from synonymy of Scopula. Six new combinations are proposed: Idaea mareotica fuscularia (TURATI, 1929), comb. n., previously subordinated under I. calunetaria (with ab. saturataria D. LUCAS, 1944 as new synonym). Brachyglossina hispanaria (PUNGELER, 1913); comb. n., Brachyglossina improbata (STAUDINGER, 1898), comb. n.; Brachyglossina brevitarsata (HAUSMANN, 1991), comb. n.; Brachyglossina consociata (STAUDINGER, 1900), comb. n., all transferred from Idaea. Holarctias rufinaria (STAUDINGER, 1861), comb. n., transferred from Scopula. Pseudocinglis moralesi (RUNGS, 1945), comb. n., transferred from Scopula. 12 taxa are raised to species rank: Cleta transiens (PROUT, 1913), stat. n. (from subsp. of C. ramosaria); Idaea mustelata (GUMPPENBERG, 1892), stat. n. (from subsp. of Idaea rusticata); Idaea albarracina (REISSER, 1933), stat. n. (from subsp. of I. incisaria); Idaea simplicior (PROUT, 1934), stat. n. (from subsp. of I. emarginata); Oar reaumuraria (MILLIERE, 1864), stat. n. (from synonymy of O. pratana); Scopula ochraceata (STAUDINGER, 1901), stat. n. (from subsp. of S. rubiginata); Scopula turbulentaria (STAUDINGER, 1870), stat. n. (from subsp. of S. turbidaria); Scopula divisaria (CHRISTOPH, 1893), stat. n. (from synonymy of S. latelineata); Glossotrophia sacraria (BANG-HAAS, 1910), stat. n. (from subspecies of G. confinaria); Holarctias rufinaria (STAUDINGER, 1861), stat. n. (from subspecies of H. sentinaria); Rhodostrophia discopunctata AMSEL, 1935, stat. n. (from synonymy of R. tabidaria, replacing misidentified tabidaria, e.g. in MULLER 1996); Cyclophora lennigiaria (FUCHS, 1883), stat. n. (from subsp. of C. albiocellaria). 13 taxa are downgraded from species to subspecific rank: Idaea belemiata helianthemata (MILLIERE, 1870), stat. n.; Idaea obsoletaria algeriensis (BETHUNE-BAKER, 1888), stat. n.; Idaea joannisiata ibericata (WEHRLI, 1927), stat. n.; Idaea camparia sodaliaria (HERRICH-SCHAEFFER, 1852), stat. n.; Idaea fractilineata subrufaria (STAUDINGER, 1899), stat. n.; Idaea tineata praetineata HAUSMANN, 1994, stat. n.; Scopula decorata congruata (ZELLER, 1847), stat. n.; Scopula submutata nivellearia (OBERTHUR, 1922), stat. n.; Scopula decolor flaccata (STAUDINGER, 1898), stat. n.; Glossotrophia diffinaria asiatica (BRANDT, 1938), stat. n.; Glossotrophia sacraria semitata (PROUT, 1913), stat. n.; Rhodostrophia tabidaria cypriaria REBEL, 1916, stat. n.; Casilda antophilaria rosearia (TREITSCHKE, 1828), stat. n. 69 taxa are downgraded to synonymy (names are listed in the last previously valid combination, in systematic order): Idaea aureolaria transsylvanaria (DANNEHL, 1927) (syn. n. to I. aureolaria); Idaea turatii (SOHN-RETHEL, 1929) and Idaea taurica (BANG-HAAS, 1907) (both syn. n. to I. consanguinaria); Idaea sericeata subrecta (PROUT, 1935) and Idaea sericeata wehrlii (PROUT, 1934) (both syn. n. to I. sericeata calvaria); Idaea sericeata altivolaria (BUBACEK, 1923) (syn. n. to I. sericeata); Idaea ochrata cantiata (PROUT, 1913) (syn. n. to I. ochrata); Idaea rusticata atrosignaria LEMPKE, 1967 (syn. n. to I. rusticata); Idaea couloniata (BALESTRE, 1907) (syn. n. to I. laevigata); Idaea efflorata eriopodata (GRASLIN, 1863) (syn. n. to I. efflorata); Idaea typicata desertata (DANNEHL, 1933) (syn. n. to I. typicata); Idaea alyssumata genilaria (WEHRLI, 1929) (syn. n. to I. alyssumata); Idaea maxima (WEHRLI, 1934) (syn. n. to I. calunetaria); Idaea calunetaria lhommei (HERBULOT, 1963) (syn. n. to I. calunetaria valesiaria); Idaea euphorbiata (BALESTRE, 1906) (syn. n. to I. belemiata); Idaea substraminata (PROUT, 1913) (syn. n. to I. belemiata); Idaea cavenacata (CHRETIEN, 1929) (syn. n. to I. belemiata helianthemata); Idaea obsoletaria distans HAUSMANN, 1991 (syn. n. to I. obsoletaria); Idaea dilutaria praeustaria (LA HARPE, 1853) and Idaea dilutaria illyrica (REISSER, 1962) (both syn. n. to I. dilutaria); Idaea politaria abmarginata (HAUSMANN, 1995) (syn. n. to I. politaria); Idaea longaria faroulti (ROTHSCHILD, 1914) (syn. n. to I. longaria); Idaea nexata cirtanaria (H. Lectotypes (see www.herbulot.de and nomenclatural chapters in the text) are designated for 28 valid species and subspecies (systematic order): Cleta transiens PROUT, 1913, Cleta perpusillaria (EVERSMANN, 1847), Idaea lambessata (OBERTHUR, 1887). Idaea ossiculata (LEDERER, 1871), Idaea ochrata albida (ZERNY, 1936), Idaea nevadata (WEHRLI, 1934), Idaea completa (STAUDINGER, 1892), Idaea incisaria praecisa (REISSER, 1933), Idaea albitorquata (PUNGELER, 1909), Idaea mancipiata (STAUDINGER, 1871), Idaea rubraria (STAUDINGER, 1901), Idaea degeneraria erschoffi (CHRISTOPH, 1872), Cinglis humifusaria (EVERSMANN, 1837), Scopula virgulata rossica (DJAKONOV, 1926), Scopula orientalis (ALPHERAKY, 1876; Scopula subtilata (CHRISTOPH, 1867), Scopula submutata nivellearia (OBERTHUR, 1922), Scopula submutata taurilibanotica (WEHRLI, 1932), Scopula vigilata (SOHN-RETHEL, 1929), Scopula ochraceata (STAUDINGER, 1901), Scopula beckeraria rebeli (PROUT, 1913), Scopula arenosaria (STAUDINGER, 1879), Scopula albiceraria vitellinaria (EVERSMANN, 1851); Glossotrophia rufomixtaria (GRASLIN, 1863), Rhodostrophia vibicaria strigata (STAUDINGER, 1871), Rhodostrophia discopunctata AMSEL, 1935, Timandra rectistrigaria (EVERSMANN, 1831), Cyclophora albipunctata griseolata (STAUDINGER, 1897). Further lectotypes are designated for 13 synonyms (alphabetical order): asiaeminoris (AMSEL, 1935) (Cyclophora puppillaria syn.), depressaria (STAUDINGER, 1892) (Idaea cervantaria syn.), europaea WEHRLI, 1934 (Idaea camparia syn.), falsaria GUENEE, 1858 (Glossotrophia rufomixtaria syn.), fatimata STAUDINGER, 1895 (Idaea manicaria syn.), granadaria STAUDINGER, 1901 (Idaea lambessata syn.), insularis WEHRLI, 1926 (Glossotrophia asellaria syn.), leukiberica WEHRLI, 1927 (Scopula decorata congruata syn.), minor ALPHERAKY, 1892 (Rhodostrophia jacularia syn.), montana WEHRLI, 1927 (Idaea cervantaria syn.), reynaldiata ROUAST, 1876 (Idaea alyssumata syn.), romani WEHRLI, 1929 (Idaea alyssumata reynaldiata syn.), violacearia STAUDINGER, 1901 (Idaea obsoletaria lilaceola syn.). Comparison with the most recent check list of European Geometridae (MULLER 1996) reveals 20 new Sterrhinae species: One species, Ochodontia adustaria (FISCHER DE WALDHEIM, 1840), transferred from Larentiinae to Sterrhinae. Six species described after MULLER (1996): Idaea leipnitzi sp. n.; Idaea admiranda sp. n.; Idaea acutipennis HAUSMANN & HONEY, 2004; Idaea dromikos sp. n.; Scopula scalercii HAUSMANN, 2003; Cyclophora serveti REDONDO & GASTON, 1999. Five species recorded for Europe in previous articles but not in MULLER (1996): Idaea nevadata (WEHRLI, 1934) (not synonym of Idaea figuraria), Idaea completa (STAUDINGER, 1892), Idaea troglodytaria (HEYDENREICH, 1851), Scopula divisaria (CHRISTOPH, 1893) and Glossotrophia mentzeri (HAUSMANN, 1993). Eight species result from species 'splitting' rather than from real new entries: Idaea mutilata (STAUDINGER, 1876) (sister species of I. litigiosaria); Idaea mustelata (GUMPPENBERG, 1892) (sister species of I. rusticata); Idaea albarracina (REISSER, 1933) (sister species of I. incisaria); Idaea simplicior (PROUT, 1934) (sister species of I. emarginata); Cinglis andalusiaria WAGNER, 1935 (sister species of C. humifusaria); Scopula turbulentaria (STAUDINGER, 1870) (sister species of S. turbidaria); Rhodostrophia discopunctata AMSEL, 1935 replacing misidentified R. tabidaria on the European fauna list (with tabidaria, however, belonging to the European fauna too); Cyclophora lennigiaria (FUCHS, 1883) (sister species of C. albiocellaria). With the above mentioned synonymisations 10 'species' have been removed from the fauna of Europe (MULLER 1996). Three other taxa are erroneously mentioned in MULLER (1996): Idaea minuscula ('RIBBE, 1912') (nomen nudum), Glossotrophia diffinaria PROUT, 1913 (misidentified, Turkish species), and Scopula remotata (GUENEE, 1858) (misidentified, Indian species). Hence there are 20 additional species for the fauna of Europe, which are, however, partially balanced by the 13 species which are deleted from the list or downgraded to infraspecific categories. Thus the species number of European Sterrhinae increases from 189 (MULLER 1996) to 196 in GME2. For some further names, erroneously considered valid species of the European fauna, and for additional species with weakly confirmed occurrence in Europe, see introduction to the checklist.
