Bucculatrix tanaceti sp. nov., an overlooked cryptic species separated from the Bucculatrix humiliella Herrich-Schäffer, [1855] species-complex (Lepidoptera, Bucculatricidae)

Analysis of external appearance, genital morphology and DNA barcoding results indicate that the name Bucculatrix humiliella Herrich-Schäffer, [1855] sensu auctorum represents a species-complex consisting of two distinct taxa. Bucculatrix tanaceti sp. nov. is here described as a separate species associated with Tanacetum vulgare L., while the host-plant of the true B. humiliella is Achillea millefolium L. The new species is compared with several species names considered synonymous with B. humiliella, including Bucculatrix capreella australis Nel, 1999, syn. nov. Colour photographs and/or illustrations of the adults, male and female genitalia, the immature stages, and the habitat are provided.
