Résumé :
Ecology of Hadena tephroleuca (Boisduval, 1833) and Hadena clara (Staudinger, 1901) — larval habitat, hostplants and preimaginal morphology (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Abstract: This paper deals with the preimaginal ecology of Hadena tephroleuca (Boisduval, 1833) and Hadena clara (Boisduval, 1833) in the Alps. Both species are locally distributed in European mountains: Sierra Nevada, Pyrenees, Alps, Balkans. Further records are known from Turkey and other parts of Asia. Their preimaginal stages are poorly known so far. Ecology, larva and pupa of Hadena tephroleuca have not been described yet. With Hadena clara only a single larval record is known from Adalusia (Sierra Nevada, pers. comm. H. Beck). Both species are adapted to rocky slopes mainly between 1500 and 2500 m above sea level. Larvae and eggs of Hadena clara were collected in numbers with flowers of Silene cordifolia All. (Caryophyllaceae) in France (Alpes maritimes, Col de Lombarde) in 2000–2300 m elevation in July and August. The plants were growing on more or less vertical primary rocks with rich lichenic cover in sunny position. Later larval stages of this species are untypical very painted and thus well camouflaged while resting at the base of the host plants or between rock gaps. Probably an additional important host plant is Silene vallesia L. This is also a rock species and shows the same distribution in the Alps as Hadena clara, locally reaching Switzerland (Valais) in the Northeast. Larvae of Hadena tephroleuca are also restricted to sunny stony or rocky places. In two localities on limestone in western Austria (Kanisfluh and Lüner See, both Vorarlberg) larvae have been recorded in samples of Gypsophila repens L. (Caryophyllaceae). In the Alpes maritimes (Southeastern France, Isola 2000) many larvae could be obtained by collecting Silene rupestris L. which was growing on primary rocks and stony ground. The ova, larvae and pupae of both species are illustrated.
